Over the past decade, southwestern Utah has undergone rapid urban growth; the populations of Iron and Washington Counties have nearly doubled. This rapid growth has created new emphasis on developing the economy of the region, while at the same time preserving unique natural features ? both geological and biological. As the population of this unique region grows, land and resource issues become more important.
Although petroleum and coal have been produced from the region, the most widespread energy resource is arguably geothermal energy. This publication presents papers on various aspects of the geology history of southwestern Utah during the Cenozoic, as geologic events and regimes through this era led to the creation of today?s active hydrothermal systems.
