InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) is a remote-sensing tool that the Utah Geological Survey is increasingly using to investigate and monitor landslides, aquifer depletion and land subsidence, and more. This powerful tool precisely measures fluctuations in land surface over large areas, and can help scientists understand how and why Earth’s surface changes over time. This publication describes what InSAR is, how it works, and how the UGS is using this tool for geologic hazards research and monitoring in Utah.
