The Sand Flats Recreation Area, which covers a large part of the plateau, is famous for its slickrock off-roading and mountain bike trails. Secondary tributaries to the Colorado River flow westward through Grandstaff and Jackass Canyons and empty into the river northwest of the map area. Mapped bedrock includes Pennsylvanian-age Paradox Formation, Permian-age Cutler Formation and White Rim Sandstone, Triassic-age Moenkopi and Chinle Formations, Jurassic-Triassic-age Wingate Sandstone, and Jurassic-age Kayenta Formation, Navajo Sandstone, Carmel Formation, Entrada Sandstone, and Curtis Formation. Quaternary-age geology includes alluvial and eolian sand deposits.
