The Blanding North 7.5′ quadrangle is located in southeastern Utah within San Juan County on the Colorado Plateau's Blanding Basin sub-province, positioned on the south flank of the Abajo Mountains where Oligocene laccoliths create structural dips that steepen northward. The quadrangle spans elevations from 5,695 to approximately 7,450 feet, with U.S. Highway 191 bisecting it north-south and Recapture Reservoir and associated creek systems (Johnson, Recapture, and tributaries including Bullpup, Bulldog, and Carrol Canyons) draining through incised channels. The area encompasses Blanding, the most populous city in San Juan County, with land ownership predominantly private (supporting dryland and irrigated farming operations), followed by federal holdings (Bureau of Land Management in the southern three-quarters and U.S. Forest Service along the northern boundary), and scattered Utah Schools and Institutional Trust Lands in the southern half. This mapping effort aims to provide updated geologic information surrounding Blanding, specifically to characterize Mesozoic stratigraphy and assess surficial deposits and potential geologic hazards, particularly landslides.
