The Cedar City 7.5-minute quadrangle is located within Iron County on the eastern margin of Cedar Valley and includes the western edge of the Markagunt Plateau. Exposed bedrock in the quadrangle ranges in age from the Triassic Timpoweap Member of the Moenkopi Formation (about 250 million years old) to Quaternary lava flows (about 1 million years old). Late Cretaceous and older rocks in the quadrangle were folded and faulted during the Sevier orogeny, a mountain-building period of tectonic compression that affected much of the western United States during late Jurassic to Paleocene time. The 40-mile-long Kanarra anticline is exposed along much of the Hurricane Cliffs and is responsible for the conspicuous ~45-degree east dip of Mesozoic strata in lower Cedar Canyon.
