By: V. S. Williams, G. W. Weir, and L. S. Beard
The Escalante quadrangle is in central Garfield County. The western part of the quadrangle lies in the Kaiparowits Plateau-Escalante Benches section, and the eastern part is in the Circle Cliffs-Teasdale anticlines section of the Colorado Plateau physiographic province. Except for lowland flats near Escalante and the irregular mesas of the Black Hills in the western part of the quadrangle, the rugged landscape is formed by benches of bare rock bordered by irregular steep cliffs that descend to deep, narrow canyons.
