Available coal resource for the Salina Canyon and southwestern part of the Wasatch Plateau coalfields, Sevier County, Utah (SS-129)

This report describes the coal stratigraphy, quality, and resource found in the Blackhawk Formation within four quadrangles in Sevier County, Utah. These quadrangles cover most of the Salina Canyon coalfield and a sliver of the southwestern part of the Wasatch Plateau coalfield. There is a well-defined, potentially minable, 80-million-ton resource in the Salina Canyon portion. The Blackhawk coal is bituminous in rank and the recovered product should be low in ash, sulfur, and mercury content.

Deeper coals are also found in the Emery Sandstone and Ferron Sandstone members of the Mancos Shale. These coals are poorly defined and too deep to mine, but may have future potential for novel in-situ energy extraction techniques, sequestration of carbon dioxide, or the coal-bed gas resource.
